The Story of Jesus Raising Lazarus from the Dead

This story is found in the Gospel of John within the Word of God (the Bible).

The story starts off a bit dark and unpromising. However, by the end of the story, the profound power of Christ’s love really shines through.

You can use this story to teach your children about the limitless possibilities that having faith in God can bring into our lives.

In a town called Bethany, lived two sisters… Martha and Mary. They sent word to Jesus that their brother, Lazarus, whom Jesus adored, was sick. Yet, Jesus did not come rushing right away. In fact, he stayed where He was for two more days before deciding to head out to visit them.

Upon His arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. The community was in mourning. The Bible tells us one of the sisters, Martha, said to Jesus “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask” (NLT).

Jesus comforted her with a promise and reassurance of Lazarus’s coming back to life. Jesus said that he is the resurrection and the life. He told Martha that anyone who believes in Him will live even after they die.

Martha had faith and believed in Jesus. She believed that he was the Messiah, the one who was sent by God.

Martha went and got her sister Mary who also expressed her grief to Jesus. They headed to Lazarus’s tomb and other mourners followed. Jesus commanded the stone be rolled away from the front of the tomb.

Then Jesus prayed aloud to God and with a loud voice, He shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And Lazarus did just that, came out from the tomb, alive and bound in the linen strips they had wrapped him. Jesus commanded them to unbound him and let him free.

This miraculous event not only showed Jesus’s power over death but also solidified the faith of many people who witnessed the event.

As we share this story with our children through coloring pages, we’re doing more than retelling a biblical story. We’re instilling in them a foundation of understanding that the Word of God is alive and active.

Biblical Lessons from This Story

There are many different lessons our kids can learn from the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.

Here are some simple, yet profound principles and lessons that even the older kids can grasp and carry with them all the days of their lives.

Faith Can Move Mountains: This story beautifully illustrates how faith in Jesus, the Son of God, has the power to perform miracles that may seem impossible to us. It teaches our kids that when we place our trust in Him, miracles can unfold before our very eyes.

Jesus Cares About What Saddens Us: The Bible said that Jesus wept. That was his reaction to Lazarus’s death. It shows that He is deeply compassionate and cares about our pain. This can reassure our children that during their times of sorrow and sadness, they are not alone. Jesus is always with them, ready to offer His love and comfort to them.

The Importance of Belief: Jesus emphasized belief several times throughout this story. He assured Martha that her brother would rise again if she believed. This lesson encourages our kids to hold onto their faith, understanding that belief in Jesus as the Son of God brings life, even in the face of death.

God’s Timing is Perfect: Even though Jesus knew about Lazarus’s illness, He chose to arrive after Lazarus had died. His timing did not take away from the miraculous blessing Jesus carried out. This teaches children that God’s timing can often be mysterious, but His timing is always perfect. It’s a lesson in patience and trusting that God knows what He is doing, even when we can’t see the full picture.

Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life: Jesus made a declaration to Martha and said “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” Jesus is introducing Himself not just as a healer, but as the very source of life. This central truth is a Christian foundational principle that can help older kids understand the core of Christian faith—that belief in Jesus grants us eternal life and victory over death.

The Power of Prayer and Gratitude: Before Jesus raised Lazarus, He prayed and thanked His Father (God) for hearing Him. This moment highlights the power of prayer and expressing gratitude to God. It’s a practical lesson for our kids to always pray and thank God, acknowledging His presence and His power in our lives.

As we guide our kids through this biblical story, we’re not only teaching them the story and the lessons that follow, but we’re also equipping them with a faith and skillset that can help them navigate life’s challenges.
