Star of Bethlehem Overview

The Star of Bethlehem is a significant symbol in the Christian tradition.

According to the Gospel of Matthew, this star appeared in the sky when Jesus was born and shined so brightly. It’s what guided the Magi (the wise men) from the East to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus.

It symbolized divine guidance and the fulfillment of prophecies. The Star of Bethlehem is often seen as a beacon of hope and faith.

Matthew 2:2

Incorporating the Ornament into Lessons

Integrating the Star of Bethlehem ornament into lessons can make the Nativity story more engaging.

Story Introduction: Begin the lesson by reading the Nativity story from the Bible and emphasize the part of the story that mentions the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1-12).

Discussion on Symbolism: Discuss the significance of the Star of Bethlehem emphasizing its role in guiding the Wise Men to Jesus. You can use this moment as a way to introduce a new vocabulary word: symbol or symbolism. Then show the relationship between the star and divine guidance.

Connection to Jesus: Discuss how the star led people to Jesus and how Jesus is the Light of the World (John 8:12). Relate the ornament to the idea of how we can guide others to Christ.

Prayer Activity: Close the lesson with a prayer, thanking God for the birth of Jesus and asking for His guidance in being a light to others.

Crafting Your Star of Bethlehem Ornament

Step 1: Print the Template

First, print out the template. Use sturdy paper like cardstock to ensure the ornament holds up. I really don't recommend standard printer paper because it won't be durable at all, but if that's all you have then it can work.

Step 2: Cut Out the Star

Have children cut out the star shape from the template as best they can. Using sharp scissors can help to get clean edges. But if you have younger kids, you might want to help them with this part to avoid any accidents.

    Step 3: Decorate the Star

Now is the time for kids to add their own personal touches of creativity. They can use markers or colored pencils to decorate the star. They can add some glitter or metallic accents for a festive touch to make the star shine just like from the Bible story.

We actually kept it super simple by printing the star on yellow cardstock paper and just adding glitter to ours. You could also have your child draw something on the star or write their name.

    Step 4: Assemble the Ornament

Now, it's time to put it all together and go from a piece of paper to a hanging ornament.

We used a popsicle stick on the back of the star to add some sturdiness to it. Apply a thin layer of glue to one side of the popsicle stick then carefully press the popsicle stick in the center of the star.

Quick tip: As you can see, we didn't cut the star out perfectly on the black lines so what we did was just flip the star over and the part that showed all the black lines would now be the back of the ornament.

Now, it's time to add the hanging loop. Use a hole puncher to punch a small hole to thread your yarn or ribbon through. Then just make the knot to secure the loop.
