The 10 Plagues Bible Story Summary

God had called Moses to lead His people to freedom. But Pharaoh's heart was hard and he refused to let the Israelites go. So God sent a series of ten plagues, each one a little more startling than the last, to persuade Pharaoh.

First came the Plague of Blood. The Nile River turned to blood and all the fish died. When Pharaoh remained unmoved, frogs covered the land in the Plague of Frogs. They were everywhere.

Next, the Plague of Gnats came with tiny insects swarming the people and animals. This was followed by the Plague of Flies which brought disease and discomfort. Despite this, Pharaoh's heart stayed hard.

God then struck the animals with the Plague of Livestock Death which devastated Egyptian wealth. The Plague of Boils then followed which caused Egyptians to have painful sores. The skies then darkened with the Plague of Hail that destroyed crops and lands.

The Plague of Locusts was next, eating anything that the hail had spared. After this, darkness fell over Egypt for three days in the Plague of Darkness.

Finally, the Plague of the Firstborn struck, taking the lives of all firstborns in Egyptian households that didn’t have the protective mark of lamb's blood on their doorposts. This last plague broke Pharaoh's resistance and he freed the Israelites.

Each plague was a sign of God's power and a call to freedom, reminding us of His power.

The Story

The story of the ten plagues shows God using His power to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Moses returned to Egypt on God's command and had to confront Pharaoh. He demanded the release of the Israelites. Each time Pharaoh refused, God caused a new plague to happen upon Egypt.

The first plague turned the Nile River to blood which caused the water to be undrinkable and killed the fish. Despite this, Pharaoh did not budge. Next, the land was overrun by frogs. Pharaoh did not budge.

Next lice infested Egypt and affected both people and animals. Still, Pharaoh did not budge. Then swarms of flies poured into Egyptian homes, leaving only the Israelites' area untouched, showcasing God's favor towards His people.

The fifth plague struck the livestock with a severe disease, killing Egyptian animals while Israelite animals remain unharmed. Then, boils broke out on the Egyptians, affecting all except the Israelites. Despite all of this, Pharaoh still did not budge.

Then God sent hail which killed crops and landscapes. Next was a plague of locusts that ate up everything else the hail had left. Next God caused darkness to fill Egypt for three days which stopped all activity. Yet, Pharaoh continued to refuse to free the Israelites.

Finally, the tenth and most devastating plague struck: the death of the firstborn in every Egyptian household. This stretched from the poorest homes all the way to Pharaoh's palace, sparing only those Israelites who marked their doorposts with lamb's blood just as instructed by God.

This last event broke Pharaoh's resistance, and he urged the Israelites to leave.

Can you think of a time when you saw someone doing something wrong and had to decide whether to follow them or do what’s right?

Background: Each of the plagues was a demonstration of God’s power and a challenge to the Egyptian gods showing that the God of Israel was greater.

Application: This story can remind you that following God, even when others are making different choices, is important.

Why do you think it's important to listen to and follow instructions from your parents, teachers, or guardians?

Background: The final plague, the death of the firstborn, finally convinced Pharaoh to free the Israelites which showed just how serious God’s command was.

Application: Just as Pharaoh learned that ignoring warnings can have serious consequences, following instructions from those who care for you can help you avoid trouble and make good decisions.
